Douglas
I. Smith, D.M.A., Artistic Director, has been the
Artistic Director and Conductor of the ECAS
since 1985. Under his direction, the ECAS has expanded its repertoire to
include beautiful vocal music from Broadway, operas, cantatas and
oratorios. Dr. Smith
holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Michigan,
Masters and Doctorate of Musical Arts degrees from the Catholic
University of America in flute performance. Dr. Smith was raised in the
tradition of singing church musicians and studied choral conducting
with Thomas Hillbish, Lester McCoy as well as at the Westminster Choir
College. As an educator, he taught at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore
for 30 years and Salisbury University. His newest endeavors include
the founding and directing of the Salisbury Chamber Singers in 2004. He has been a pupil of the famed
Jean-Pierre Rampal for several summers and a performer at the L'academie
d'ete de musique de Nice in southern France. Dr. Smith has conducted
biennial European tours with the Chesapeake Chorale to England, France,
Italy, Germany, Austria, and Spain and will conduct a concert tour of
New England in June, 2009. |
